What Is the Best Way to Overcome Financial Fear?

Bestselling author Renée E. Bryan joins Your Safe Money Show to share a new perspective on faith, money, and financial freedom through The Morality of Money.

You can work hard, pay your bills, and still worry that you will never have enough. Enough to retire. Enough to handle the unexpected. Enough to feel safe. When does that fear finally loosen its grip?

For me, the best way to overcome financial fear begins with understanding how money works—and deciding what you want it to do for your life. Faith belongs in that conversation, too. What do we trust? What do we believe about security? And how do those beliefs shape the choices we make?

Those questions brought me into Todd Sjöberg’s studio for two episodes of Your Safe Money Show. But our conversation began years earlier, in my classroom. Todd and Kristin Nelson have attended my continuing education classes for years, and sharing The Morality of Money with their audience felt like taking that longtime connection somewhere new.

For years, seasoned financial professionals Todd Sjöberg and Kristin Nelson have attended my continuing education classes at Bryan Ventures. From the beginning, those classes were more than a place to earn credits. We get to know one another and share stories. My goal, as a financial educator, was to help people build wealth and secure their own financial futures and those of their clients. Joining Todd on Your Safe Money Show was a wonderful extension of that longtime connection.

Todd is the owner of Sjoberg & Holmstrom, LLC, and Kristin serves as the firm’s CFO. We’ve connected through many financial conversations in our insurance continuing education classes. Now, Todd welcomed me into his studio to share The Morality of Money with his listeners. Our conversation became two shows about overcoming fear, faith, and what makes a life rich.

You can listen to both episodes below. And if you are looking for help with your own retirement or insurance questions, you will find more about Todd, Kristin, and their business later in this post. You can also connect directly with me by SUBSCRIBING to my newsletter.

Financial freedom begins with more than a number

How much money would it take for you to feel secure? It is an important question, but the answer involves more than an account balance. Our ideas about success, our past experiences, and our expectations for the future all influence whether we feel we have enough. Learning the mechanics of money helps us make informed choices; understanding ourselves helps us decide which choices are worth making.

That is why I wrote The Morality of Money. I wanted to connect simple economic principles with the experiences that shape a life: the choices we make, the losses we endure, the faith that sustains us, and the courage it takes to begin again. We each have different priorities and circumstances. Financial freedom needs to make sense for the person living it.

A longtime connection—and a new conversation about faith

One of the things I treasure about teaching is getting to see familiar faces year after year. Todd and Kristin have been part of that experience for a long time. So this opportunity had a personal meaning beyond a radio appearance: it was a chance to share the book with people who have been part of my professional life for years, and to bring that conversation to a new audience.

Todd also told me something that made this connection even sweeter. His wife had commented that she “loved” me after my appearance on Julie Wagner’s Leadership Clearly show. That interview was more focused on faith, and hearing her response meant so much to me. You can watch my conversation with Julie about faith and The Morality of Money.

His wife’s response was a lovely reminder that these conversations reach people in different ways. Someone may first connect with the financial lessons, while someone else connects with the faith or the story of beginning again. The Morality of Money brings those threads together because our money decisions are part of the whole of our lives. Being welcomed into Todd’s studio gave us another place to explore that connection—and, as I hope you can tell from this picture, we had so much fun!

Ready to overcome financial fear? Choose your next step.

What would change if your next money decision came from understanding instead of fear? As you listen to the shows, bring the conversation back to your own life. You do not need every answer before you begin. These three questions can help you find a starting point:

Notice the fear.
What worry keeps showing up when you think about money?

Name what matters.
What would a rich life look like for you?

Choose a beginning.
What small step could you take toward that life?

You do not have to wait until everything is perfect to start building a different relationship with money. Learn something useful. Ask a question you have been avoiding. Take a step that serves your future. My hope is that these conversations help you see possibilities where you once saw only worry.
