Life Takes Us to Unexpected Places
Financial preparation gives us the freedom to recognize—and embrace—the opportunities waiting along the way.
Life has a way of taking us places we never expected.
When I visited Connecticut, I had the opportunity to spend time with my cousin Sue and her family. I am deeply grateful for my friendship with Sue and for the warmth, laughter, and connection I share with the entire family.
That visit also reminded me that the next chapter of life may look very different from the one we originally imagined. My daughter lives in Rhode Island, and I have considered whether I might someday move closer to her. Sue and I both enjoy biking, which makes the idea of exploring New England’s trails, coastal communities, and changing seasons especially appealing.
Our plans can change.
We cannot predict every turn. We may move to be closer to family, discover a new community, retire earlier than expected, begin a new career, or simply decide that we want more freedom to enjoy the people and activities that matter to us.
But we can prepare ourselves financially so that, when an opportunity appears, fear does not automatically make the decision for us.

Money Is Not the Destination
Sue’s review reflects an important part of The Morality of Money. Financial knowledge is not merely about accumulating the largest possible account balance. It is about creating choices.
The Freedom to Move
To live closer to family or begin again in a place that feels like home.
The Freedom to Explore
To bike a new trail, visit people we love, travel, and experience more of life.
The Freedom to Choose Well
To make decisions guided by our principles rather than by panic, pressure, or scarcity.
We may not know exactly where life will take us, but investing carefully, managing debt wisely, and making ethical financial decisions can help us remain ready.
Being financially prepared does not guarantee that every opportunity will be easy. It does, however, give us a better chance to say yes when something meaningful comes into view.
The purpose of money is not simply to possess more.
It is to help us live with greater freedom, purpose, generosity, and courage.
Where Might Life Take You Next?
The Morality of Money combines practical financial principles with a deeper conversation about values, choices, freedom, and doing what is right.
